Olinda: Olinda is a colonial town on Brazils northeast coast, near the city of Recife. Founded in 1535 by the Portuguese, its built on steep hillsides and distinguished by its 18th-century architecture, baroque churches, convents, monasteries and brightly painted houses. Originally a center for the sugarcane industry, its now known as an artists colony, with many galleries, workshops and museums. Alto da Sé, Olindas hilltop cathedral square, has a crafts market and stalls selling acarajé (black-eyed pea fritters). The Caixa dAgua elevator provides panoramic coastal views. The Convent of San Francisco is a baroque religious complex incorporating the white-and-yellow Nossa Senhora das Neves church and cloisters with Portuguese azulejo tiles. The Contemporary Art Museum has thousands of works by Brazilian artists including Candido Portinari. The Museu do Mamulengo displays traditional handcrafted puppets. Guinea-Bissau Drone Flight: Bissau is the capital city of Guinea-Bissau, on the coast of West Africa. Its near the point where the Geba River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Bissau Velho, the old city center, is filled with decaying Portuguese colonial buildings. Nearby, Fortaleza dAmura is an old fort still used by the countrys military. Up the road, the war-damaged former Presidential Palace has a neoclassical facade. Along the riverfront is the Pidjiguiti port, where a monument marks the site of a massacre of striking dockworkers in 1959. A local market in the Bandim area offers intricate wood carvings and textiles. More African handicrafts are on display at the National Ethnographic Museum. The city is a jumping-off point for the Bijagós Islands, known for sandy beaches and wildlife like sea turtles, water birds and hippos. // Guinea-Bissau is a tropical country on West Africas Atlantic coast thats known for national parks and wildlife. The forested, sparsely populated Bijagós archipelago is a protected biosphere reserve. Its main island, Bubaque, forms part of the Orango Islands National Park, a habitat for saltwater hippos. On the mainland, the capital, Bissau, is a port with Portuguese colonial buildings in its old city center.
Near the Senegal border in the north, Varela is a notable beach community in Varela National Park, reached over rugged terrain from the town of São Domingos. Bordering a nearby river, Rio Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park is a habitat for migrating birds. Theres hiking and boating in Cantanhez Forest National Park, near the countrys southern tip. Lagoas de Cufada Natural Park, farther north, is a wetlands region full of marshes and river channels. Guinea Drone Flight: Conakry is the capital of Guinea, a country in West Africa. The city sits on the slender Kaloum Peninsula, which extends into the Atlantic Ocean. Just offshore, the Loos Islands are known for their beaches, dense palm forests and water sports. In town, the enormous Grand Mosque has 4 tall, elegant minarets. Next to the mosque, the large Botanical Garden features kapok trees and tropical flowers. Nearby is the Franco-Guinean Cultural Center, which organizes art exhibitions as well as theater performances. The center is also the main base for Les Ballets Africains, a national dance troupe. To the southwest, near the harbor, is the distinctive red-and-yellow St. Marys Cathedral, built in the early 20th century. The National Museum illustrates Guinean cultural heritage with its collections of statues, masks and musical instruments. Vendors at the bustling Niger Market sell fruit and vegetables. // Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Its known for the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, in the southeast. The reserve protects a forested mountain range rich in native plants and animals, including chimpanzees and the viviparous toad. On the coast, the capital city, Conakry, is home to the modern Grand Mosque and the National Museum, with its regional artifacts. The sandy beaches of the Loos Islands, near Conakry, are backed by thick palm forests. To the north, Cape Verga has popular beach towns like Bel Air as well as more remote, undeveloped beaches. Fouta Djallon is a highland area in central Guinea. It has rolling grasslands, high mountain peaks and layered sandstone formations eroded over time to create jungle canyons and deep gorges. Two cascades combine to form Bridal Veil Waterfall near the town of Kindia. Native wild dogs roam Badiar Transboundary National Park, on the Senegal border. Nearby, Rua do Bom Jesus is a cobbled street with colorful houses and Kahal Zur Israel, thought to be the first synagogue in the Americas.
