The capital, Banjul, and nearby Serrekunda offer access to beaches. Jufureh is a river village made famous in writer Alex Haley Roots, a multigenrational story about the American slave trade. The remains of Fort James, a 17th-century slave-trade outpost, stand on nearby Kunta Kinteh Island. The lush Abuko Nature Reserve is home to crocodiles, monkeys and birds. Makasutu Culture Forest is private ecotourism reserve with palm forest, mangroves, and migrating baboons. Upriver, the Wassu Stone Circles mark graves dating back more than 1,000 years.
