About Brasilia: The Cathedral of Brasília (Portuguese: Catedral Metropolitana de Brasília, Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília) is the Roman Catholic cathedral serving Brasília, Brazil, and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília. It was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and projected by Brazilian structural engineer Joaquim Cardozo, and was completed and dedicated on May 31, 1970. The cathedral is a hyperboloid structure constructed from 16 concrete columns, weighing 90 tons each. // A Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, mais conhecida como Catedral de Brasília, é a catedral católica que serve a Brasília, Brasil. É sede da Arquidiocese de Brasília. Concebida pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer com projeto estrutural do engenheiro Joaquim Cardozo, foi o primeiro monumento a ser criado na capital federal. A pedra fundamental foi lançada em 12 de setembro de 1958, e sua estrutura ficou pronta em 1960, onde apareciam somente a área circular de setenta metros de diâmetro, da qual se elevam dezesseis colunas de concreto com noventa toneladas cada (pilares de seção parabólica), num formato hiperboloide simulando mãos voltadas para o céu em oração. Foi concluída e dedicada em 31 de maio de 1970. Seus vitrais são de autoria da artista plástica Marianne Peretti. O projeto estrutural de Cardozo reduziu o número de colunas e permitiu que as bases dos pilares ficassem delgadas, apenas tocando o chão, além de ter substituído o que seria uma cinta de concreto a unir as colunas no topo por uma laje posta um tanto mais abaixo do previsto.
