About Ainoshima: Ainoshima 相島, famously known as one of Japans Cat Islands 猫島, is a small fishing island off the coast of Fukuoka Prefecture where a remarkable population of free-roaming cats lives alongside the local community. Reached by ferry from Shingu, the island offers a peaceful escape from nearby Fukuoka City, with cats wandering around the harbor, traditional houses, narrow village lanes, fishing boats, and quiet coastal paths. Unlike a conventional tourist attraction, Ainoshima remains an authentic inhabited fishing community, giving visitors a fascinating combination of everyday Japanese island life and countless feline encounters. Walking around the island reveals rocky coastline, shrines, small beaches, ocean views, and traces of its long maritime history, while curious cats appear throughout the settlement and waterfront. Surrounded by the waters of the Genkai Sea, Ainoshima provides a charming contrast to urban Japan. This walking tour captures the cats, fishing village, coastline, and relaxed atmosphere of one of Japans most famous feline islands.
