About Mamu Tropical Skywalk: A close encounter with a Southern Cassowary at Mamu Tropical Skywalk in Far North Queensland, Australia, turned an ordinary rainforest walk into one of the wildest wildlife encounters imaginable, as this enormous prehistoric-looking bird decided to follow me along the trail. Often described as the worlds most dangerous bird, the Southern Cassowary is a powerful, flightless rainforest bird native to northeastern Australia and New Guinea, recognizable by its brilliant blue and red neck, black feathers, helmet-like casque, and massive legs. Cassowaries can grow to around 1.8 meters tall and are capable of running at impressive speeds through dense rainforest, but their most intimidating feature is the long, dagger-like claw on the inner toe of each foot. When threatened or cornered, a cassowary can defend itself with extremely powerful kicks capable of causing serious injuries, making close encounters something that should always be treated with caution and plenty of distance. This particular cassowary appeared surprisingly curious and continued following me through the tropical rainforest around Mamu Tropical Skywalk, creating an unforgettable mixture of fascination, excitement, and a little nervousness. Surrounded by the ancient Wet Tropics rainforest of Far North Queensland, coming face-to-face with one of Australias most extraordinary and potentially dangerous animals became an unexpected wildlife experience I certainly wont forget.
