Miroslaw Wawak visited French Guiana in 2017, stepping into one of South America’s most unique and least-visited regions. As an overseas department of France, it offered a fascinating blend of European infrastructure and tropical jungle life. In Cayenne, he observed colorful Creole culture, visited vibrant markets, and explored colonial-era streets lined with wooden houses. He made the memorable journey to the Îles du Salut, home to the infamous Devil’s Island penal colony, where history and isolation created a haunting atmosphere. But it was also in the untouched rainforests and rich biodiversity of the interior where French Guiana truly came alive. It was a place of contrasts, where rocket launches from the Guiana Space Centre coexist with indigenous traditions and dense jungle ecosystems. For Miroslaw, French Guiana stood as a powerful reminder that the most fascinating places often exist far off the beaten path.
