In 2024, Miroslaw Wawak made a cautious and deeply respectful visit to Yemen, seeking to understand one of the world’s most misunderstood and war-affected nations. In Socotra, he found surreal landscapes with dragon blood trees and untouched beaches that felt completely otherworldly. Despite the country’s struggles, the resilience, warmth, and storytelling traditions of the Yemeni people stood tall. Yemen was humbling, heartbreaking, and deeply human—a reminder of both beauty and fragility.

About Central Socotra: Central Socotra, located on the remote Socotra Island in Yemen, is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and ecological significance. Often referred to as the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to unique flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth. At the heart of this remarkable landscape are the iconic Dragonblood Trees (Dracaena cinnabari), which have become a symbol of Socotras otherworldly charm. The Dragonblood Trees, named for their red sap resembling dragons blood, are a striking sight with their umbrella-shaped canopies. These ancient trees thrive in the highlands of central Socotra, adapting to the arid climate and rocky terrain over millions of years. Beyond their surreal appearance, the trees hold cultural and medicinal significance, with their sap historically used for dyes, medicine, and rituals. Central Socotra also boasts other unique species, including rare frankincense trees, bottle trees, and a wide variety of endemic plants and animals. Hiking through the rugged terrain reveals breathtaking landscapes, from limestone plateaus to deep ravines, and offers a chance to immerse yourself in this untouched natural wonder. The islands rich biodiversity extends to its local communities, where traditional lifestyles harmonize with the environment. Visitors can learn about the Soqotri people, their ancient language, and their sustainable practices, which have preserved this fragile ecosystem for generations. Exploring Central Socotra and its famous Dragonblood Trees is like stepping into another world—a destination that enchants nature lovers, adventurers, and photographers alike. With its surreal landscapes and unmatched biodiversity, Socotra is truly a jewel of the natural world.
